If you find yourself stuck copying reference photos, this 3-day, in-person workshop is for you! We’ll dive deep into how to push beyond the photo by exploring composition, value, and color in ways that give your paintings clarity, strength, and emotional punch.

This workshop isn’t about technique for technique’s sake. It’s about discovering how to make your work unmistakably yours. You’ll bring your own references, and together we’ll transform ordinary photos into expressive, powerful images through:

I’ll be demonstrating with gouache, but all mediums are welcome. You’ll walk away with tools and techniques that will help open up a whole new direction for your work.

Plein Air Along the Oregon Coast

Do you want to learn how to capture the spirit of every place you visit? Here’s your chance. Spend five days near the idyllic town of Astoria, Oregon (2 hours from Portland) where charming Victorian architecture is surrounded by rugged coastlines and lush forests. We’ll test our plein air skills with a new location each day, emphasizing observation and small paintings. Through our exploration of subjects, shapes, and palettes unique to Astoria, you will learn to capture the spirit of the Pacific Coast using techniques you can take anywhere.
